Novecento Un monologo Italian Edition Alessandro Baricco 9788807880889 Books Reviews

  • The eponymous hero of this book, an abandoned immigrant infant on a cruise ship, brought up by the sailors, never leaves the ship, a microcosm of the world, and mysteriously becomes a genius jazz pianist, at one point surpassing the great Jelly Roll Morton, who challenges him to a musical duel. There are fantastic elements to the story, but somehow they cohere and make an entertaining read--lo stile del autore è anche creativo e divertente.
  • Awesome book. I read it in one breath!
  • The book is one of my favorite ever, I bought it as a present for my girlfriend. And even though it was used, it was in perfect conditions!
  • Super
  • Excellent!!!
  • It is in Italian and German and I needed it to be Italiian and English.
  • DIDN'T COME IN TIME ( VERY SAD. Ended up having to buy it at a local bookstore....waste of time and of money. Once again, (
  • A wonderfully spirited, if not (pleasantly) unbelievable, account of a person born on a ship who plays jazz (piano) on the very same ship. (Did I mention that he never leaves the ship...well sort of). Baricco has taken the improbable and, in the most unexpected ways, made it impossible and then sad...and then funny...and then...(well you will have to read the roughly 60 pages of this monologue to see). There are few descriptions that I could imagine that could come close to describing what it was like to read this book that reads like a play. How did I feel after reading it? Like I needed to read it again. And I did. Reading Baricco is like listening to your favourite song on repeat. There are notions he introduces early on in the book that come back in your mind like the chorus of that favourite song; or passages that, once read, have to be read immediately again for the humour, for the sheer delight, for the absurdity of the scene. Novecento is at once an exercise in economy and grandeur. Very few books of this length (and even longer) come close to this level of quality, finality or satisfaction. Highly recommended for its insights on the journeys we take in life, and how we relate to people along the way. "
