Drawing on personal stories, research, and historical events, an esteemed educator offers a vision of educational justice inspired by the rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists.

Drawing on her life's work of teaching and researching in urban schools, Bettina Love persuasively argues that educators must teach students about racial violence, oppression, and how to make sustainable change in their communities through radical civic initiatives and movements. She argues that the US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color. Instead of trying to repair a flawed system, educational reformers offer survival tactics in the forms of test-taking skills, acronyms, grit labs, and character education, which Love calls the educational survival complex.

To dismantle the educational survival complex and to achieve educational freedom - not merely reform - teachers, parents, and community leaders must approach education with the imagination, determination, boldness, and urgency of an abolitionist. Following in the tradition of activists like Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, and Fannie Lou Hamer, We Want to Do More Than Survive introduces an alternative to traditional modes of educational reform and expands our ideas of civic engagement and intersectional justice.

"This should be required reading for anyone remotely involved with the education of children. Dr. Love inspires the heart while challenging the way one thinks. She defines black joy in a way that makes you smile and concurrently ache...and she unapologetically challenges systems that actively work to break that joy. She affirms those doing the work and calls out those who simply aren’t doing enough. Simply put, the book changes you. If I could give it a million stars, I would."

We Want to Do More Than Survive Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom Audible Audio Edition Bettina Love Misty Monroe Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • This book is a must-read for every educator. It is completely transformative; and most importantly it's a call to action. Not in the gimmicky way that so many initiatives get pushed forward in districts, but in a real, down to earth way that begs and pleads educators to be human. Take a good hard look at yourself, your practices, your beliefs, your understandings, your own implicit bias. Look at your students as the beautiful, strong humans they are and the beautiful, strong, empowered humans they could be when given the tools to reach their potential. It's not about any kind of fix, or initiative, or data survey or test score. It's about humans helping humans. The only way to do that is to ask those same questions of your students. Not in a hypothetical sense where you make up the answers based on the visible, but really talk to your students. Dive deep into who they are and who they want to become. Then consider the power you have to raise them up!
  • This should be required reading for anyone remotely involved with the education of children. If I could give it a million stars, I would.
  • Dr. Love ha written a piece that EVERY EDUCATOR MUST read! Dr. Love shifts the paradigm of educational pedagogy by arguing that education is not enpugh nor the answer to creating transformational change. We need to create a world where black and brown youth are truly seen, celebrated, and provided with the utmost love and respect to thrive. This piece is amazing and a must read! As a high school educational leader and a higher ed professor, I will be using this text to engage existing and pre-professional educators in necessary reflection and the re-envisioning of education for liberation.
  • This book is outstanding! As someone invested in education, it was a illuminating and healing. Thank you Dr. Love for writing this book! Every educator must read it.
  • Amazing and empowering. A must read for all educators.
  • If you can only read one book in 2019, let it be this book. If you believe it takes a village, read this book. If you believe in education, read this book. If you believe in our humanity, read this book. Brilliant!
  • Bettina Love addresses what is needed for people of color in the United States to thrive rather than merely survive. She passionately argues for the need to create new systems and structures for educational, political, economic, and community freedom. While Love as an educator focuses the book primarily on the educational system, she also addresses the challenges that must be confronted in the wider American culture. She recognizes the intersectionality of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationalism, and dis/ability. Love advocates for abolitionist teaching, which is working in solidarity with communities of color to eradicate injustice in and outside of schools. Love defines what abolitionist teaching is and what it must accomplish, but this is not a how-to book providing a specific process for implementation. The strength of the book is to get readers to recognize that those on the margins of society are excluded because of systemic barriers. Educational reforms will be ineffective unless they address the root causes of injustice. Educators are not the only ones who should read this book. Every American concerned about the future of our nation can learn much from reading this volume.
  • An indictment of the American education establishment, especially as it relates to the classrooms inhabited by "dark" bodies the author favors the "dark" term as one that includes a wide variety of people who suffer from a history of injustice and oppression. She casts a critical eye on a number of gimmicks that are popular these days the KIPP school movement, or the idea of teaching "grit" (this was a new one on me, but that particular gimmick certainly sets off my BS detector!). Education nowadays is largely based on perpetuating a culture based on White rage. Instead of gimmickry, she advocates the radical mindset which was typical of the abolitionists of the 19th century hence the subtitle "Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom." As she says, rather than simply being allies, right-thinking people need to be co-conspirators, willing to put their bodies on the line to overturn the system. A book that won't provide much comfort to any people on any side, but which may get them thinking.

Internment Samira Ahmed Books Reviews

  • I had very high hopes for this book. After reading the summary I was filled with anticipation, is it going to be like the holocaust? Guantanamo? Nope. This book had such potential to be something really great. This is something that could become a real thing in our future. The execution however left much to be desired. I don't believe the author did any sort of research for a book like this. She has no basic knowledge of how any sort of camp or prison works or just chose to ignore anything practical. By far the one thing that I think just makes the whole story crap is that you wrote a 17-year-old starting a revolution inside the camp and stopping the Muslim internment. I think it was a poor choice to write a book about such an important topic and then make it about a girl who is obsessed with her boyfriend.
  • This book begins during a horrific time for Muslims in the U.S. A president has been elected who tweets his hatred of Muslims almost daily. Fake news abounds and refugees are being called rapists and criminals. The Secretary of War is an Islamophobe – and yes, that’s a cabinet seat we haven’t seen for a while in real life. It has a slightly different ring to it than Secretary of the Army or Secretary of Defense. Nazis have marched on DC and books are burning. There is so much wrong with the country and one of the crushing things is that so many people encouraged or allowed all of this.

Layla Amin and her family have watched things rapidly change around them. Muslims, much like the Jewish people in 1930s Germany, have begun to see their rights and freedoms stripped away one at a time. Layla just wants a normal life where she can be with her boyfriend without worrying about curfews and the unraveling of her world. Layla and her parents don’t see things the same way. They want to see the good in people. They still believe that they will be okay if they don’t make waves. They have hope and prayers, but Layla wants more than that to hold onto as more things are ripped away from them.

Samira Ahmed has crafted a story that is terrifying in its possibilities. Many of the issues in the book seem to have been lifted straight from our current newspapers. The story is all too realistic. It’s set just a bit in the future and it could certainly inspire some fear and heartache in readers. While there is hatred, bigotry, and violence against Muslims, there is also a lot of hope. Her parents are an excellent example of that and while the young people are frustrated by hope without action, they too have hope. One of the young people says that holding onto hope is hard work. This is quickly followed by a Rogue One quote, “Rebellions are built on hope.” There are people of all ages who step up at times, but the majority of the heavy lifting in this book is done by the young people. It’s a powerful testament to the strength and courage of young people. I loved that aspect of the story. Youth are often underestimated. Here the youth don’t wait for leaders, they become leaders.

By taking them to an internment camp, Layla feels that the government has taken her voice and choice. Through the book, Layla discovers that this may not be entirely correct. As she meets other frustrated people, she learns and grows and finds her own way of being in this restrictive place. She also discovers the power of unity and finds ways to be heard.

This is partially a story of survival. It offers a glimpse into what some people are willing to do to survive. What people are willing to give up to survive can be astounding and not always in good ways. Ahmed also shows us what some people are willing to do for others.

This book is a warning, a message of hope, and a call to action. The cap on the cover says Resist and so does the entire book.
  • I had no naive ideas that this book would not be a hard read. I knew what I was getting into, literally a quarter of my bookcases are full of non-fiction or historical fictions that take place during the Holocaust or WWI/WWII. Even then I had to close the book sometimes because it all seemed too real.

Layla, her parents, and thousands of other Muslims are sent to an internment camp called Mobius, the fact that it was close to the Japanese internment camp Manzanar was not lost on me either. The cause of such a drastic move? Islamophia. Does it sound familiar? This book is placed in what seems like a few years from now, in this presidency, under this current political climate and that made this book all the more urgent.

The scenes that take place in the book are appalling not because they are violent, but because we see actions like this committed every day. A hijab being ripped off a woman's head, a man being shot just because he is Muslim, a woman being silenced because she has no right to speak. How did they end up here? The census, that one that keeps track of our religions, ages, nationalities, and livelihoods that we report to the government every now and then. That flimsy piece of paper, if you checked Islam you are at Mobius.

The president has declared Muslims an enemy of the state, so they rounded them up just like they did to Japanese-Americans in the past. Layla had learned of this history in school and it was her only reference to what was happening to her, it made her scared and at times selfish but determined. She refused to live the rest of her life there. So she decided to make a start much like Sophie Scholl did during the time of Nazi propaganda. This was scary because let's remember that Sophie was executed. She knew it was a risk but to be honest she could have died just as easy by just being within those gates, anyone who made false moves were taken away never to be seen again.

I won't ruin the story by elaborating on the allies that she finds or those that learn of her plans and join her in the revolution, because that is honestly the best part of the story. The teenagers in this book used their place of "Privilege" as minors to get ahead. They couldn't be treated like the others, they couldn't just simply be disappeared without a trace. So they stood tall and spoke for those who couldn't. That is the point of the book. It is to educate the younger generation, allow them space to reflect, and show them that just because their young does not mean they are powerless. A small voice is better than no voice and this book does its best to bring that home.

Despite all its harsh reminders, it also gives us a sense of hope. Not everyone in the country agrees with what is going on, kind of like now. Those people fought for them when they learned of the injustices, even some that allowed it to happen realized it was a big mistake and joined the cause. It is the kind of situation where you won't really know how to react until it's happening and I am glad the book provides a space for both.

    Rating 5/5 ❤❤❤❤❤

My rating is a #unpopular opinion with many readers of this book, I will give some examples of the complaints below and my reasoning behind why it shouldn't matter. You can make your decision on this and read it for yourself as we all know books are perceived differently by different readers.

The book is too obvious, it doesn't give us space to make our own conclusions said by most people over the age of 21- The book wasn't made for them, it was made for younger readers who need books that tell a compelling story quickly and with all the consequences and backstory because attention spans for reading these days is short. I mean come on, I get annoyed when a commercial interrupts my anything and its only 30 seconds.

Layla is selfish it looks like all she wants is her boyfriend- Her mom and dad are in the camp with her, so the only person on the outside she can really want is her boyfriend, but that scene where she begs to call him is not about David. It's about everyone's loved ones outside those gates. Everyone has to beg for a phone call, get it approved, and still be careful because they are being listened to. For Layla that was David but for others, that was a husband, a son, or a daughter.

Layla is too informed about previous internment camps in history- I learned about the Holocaust and Japanese internment camps when I was in tenth grade, two years younger than Layla, and was taught by an amazing student teacher, who really ingrained in us the importance of studying situations like this and learning from them. I have continued to educate myself and read about those moments in history ever since then. So yes, she could have been that educated about the topic at 17.

David is annoying- Indeed he is, I honestly am still trying to comprehend if he could have been written in a different way where he didn't seem so clueless and unaware of what was going on around him. I know he was trying his best and did play a role in it but he just seemed out of place a bit.

The Director of the Internment camp is cartoonish- yes he is, but what matters is not his reactions but his power. Time and time through the book he shows that he can get away with literally anything. He gives an air of desperation to Layla's resistance. The fact that his actions have no consequences is what matters. Because it means that at Mobius there were no respites, no way out, no one to protect them. They were no one. He got angry like a child sometimes and turned blue in the face because of her actions, but let's not pretend that there weren't people in internment camps who died just because a guard was in a bad mood.

The book was too raw, too crass it felt like it was throwing its beliefs at me- It is raw at times and in your face but if you were inside the internment camp it would be in your face, you would be in the middle of the violence, you would feel the oppression, this book is not about beliefs its about right and wrong. The book makes you feel like you are there like there is no place to go. That is the point, they had nowhere to go.

Now that you have been informed about the chief complaints of the book, I hope that you give it a chance and make your own opinion on the matter. This is such an important book for young adults to have a discussion about these days, and for adults to read and share with others.
  • It IS happening. In summer 2018 children of asylum seeking parents were taken from their parents and put into detention camps. Asylum seeking families are also held together in socalled "family detention prisons by ICE. Although these are predominanty Christian, religious hatred is rising. In October 11 worshippers were murdered at a synagogue. In France hate crimes against Jews happen almost daily. 51 worshippers were murdered in mid March 2019 at a mosque in New Zealand.
Although Muslims have not been interned, they face great prejudice. When the mosque shooting happened the President did the best he could never to mention that the victims were Muslims.
This book is not dystopian. Young people and adults need to read it and do what we can to erase bigotry from our hearts AND our government.
The way we are safe and free is by standing up for each other.

  • Who is Kevin Suber? A vessel for empathetic words from a higher source.

Kevin and I crossed paths in 1972 as fourth graders. We had two great years of friendship where we embraced each other’s similarities and differences with pure love. I remember Kevin motivating me to be better back then. I was in awe of his kindness and brilliance. Kevin J. Suber was special back then. He needed a school that can better serve his high functioning skills so in 1974 we essentially lost touch after 5th grade.

Fast Forward four decades and social media collided our souls together again. It became clear to me as I learned more about him in our new founded online relationship that he has the same drive and call in life now to serve others. Thank You Kevin. So when he recently came out with his book, I wanted to be the first one to get it. I understand why he had to write it. The words have always been their for Kevin to help others walk through their life moments and they need to be shared with others.

He will show you how to define your own kingdom and will guide you to create a path that builds your own kingdom, moment by moment. Your kingdom must be built anyway, why not internalize Kevin’s magical words on the pages of his book that are simply divine intervention. Life is a beautiful buffet take what you want and leave the rest. You owe it to yourself to read this book and take what you need.

Kevin’s has an extraordinary ability to eloquently take us through the lessons he learned on his pathway. His goal is simple and powerful for others to get what they need for their own calling in life.. I loved spending my most precious resource, my time and attention reading Kingdom Business. I sure did fill my plate with plenty of good wisdom which has made me better. I enjoy all the moments that are the brick and mortar of my kingdom and the building never stops. Thank you dear childhood friend for reappearing in my life and helping me make my kingdom better.

Doomsday Civil War A PostApocalyptic Survival Thriller The Doomsday Series Book 5 edition by Bobby Akart Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • The Antifas have committed a terrible act that will lead to death for many but will it be the hero’s of Haven or the Antifas who win the day. The action starts full bore and never stops.

Charlotte North Carolina becomes the epicenter for the search for Hannah Cortland, who was taken from Haven by the Antifas . While back at Haven secrets start to come out about George Trowbridge and his son-in-law Cort, as well as other members of Haven. Delta also has his hands full at Haven trying to get to Frankie, his ex partner and now a turn coat who killed his son. This is just the first four chapters, things go full auto soon after. Many questions are answered and the battle for America begins in earnest.

As one battle rages in Charlotte another battle for life ends at Pine Orchard Connecticut. With his family around him George Trowbridge will pass the baton to his son-in-law Cort and finally make peace with his daughter.

As one man prepares to meet his maker his arch enemies son Jonathan and the traitor Briscoe will face their own fate at the hands of the Haven heroes. Without giving any more away let me say the action is nonstop and will keep you up all night to find out who will live and who will die and what the fate of our American way of life will be like in the future.

Bobby Akart has again written a heart stopping series that looks at the direction our country is going and the reason why but gives hope for the future as true patriots rise to the challenge. He delves into the thin line between good and evil and how the intentions of both sides can lead to devastation and hatred. Some want a country that will be free and prosperous for all and others want a country that will make only a few rich and destroy the American way of life as we know it.

Bobby is still the King of TEOTWAWKI!!!! Choose Freedom and Godspeed Patriot!!!!
  • As with most of Bobby's series, I find the final book bittersweet! What will become of our country, torn apart by dichotomous factions seeking to bring us back to their ideal America ? A ripped from the headlines view of the lack of middle ground and extremist views. Who comes out on top? The Trowbridge family ? Hard to really accurately describe the amount of research and detail that Bobby loads into this series and how easy it seems to be for one side to spark a civil war !
  • I found this book to be a well thought out final book wrapping up the series with an unexpected finale.
This is the first series I have purchased from Bobby Akart and I enjoyed every book. The characters are real, people you can relate to. You become entrenched in their stories and hate to see it all end.
I love the flow of these books and the way Bobby Akart spins his tales. I'm also loving the way fact and fiction blend in the stories.
I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good story, especially SHTF story fans.
  • Today's news falls right in line with events in the Doomsday series. Haven't we learned yet? There are those with power and the mindset tho make Doomday real. If you think it's Democrats vs Republicans it's not. It's the Rule of Law vs Anarchy. The Constitution vs Dictatorship.
  • I really was liking the series, but it was over in a very short period, and the wrap up seemed too easy to me. I loved the characters, and the storyline, right up until protagonists had their easy finish. I’d really like to see longer books. Nearly 40% of the book is coverage of the previous books in the series, or previews for other books by the author.
  • Best storyline I’ve read in a long time. Bobby, makes you feel like you’re a part of the characters lives. I fear the narrative mirrors reality way closely.

I will continue to support the author if his work product stays this strong.
  • The author did a great job of using fictional names for the real life characters who are trying to ruin the USA. The Doomsday series was an excellent story from start to finish. We are in the midst of a war of words and ideologies. This story may have been fiction, but it may become reality. God speed patroits....Trust the plan.
  • I’ve read a lot of this genre and Bobby Akart is among the best. A good story well written. Always entertaining, engaging and sometimes even thought provoking. If you like action stories you’ll like this one.

The Players Ball A Genius a Con Man and the Secret History of the Internet Rise Audible Audio Edition David Kushner George Newbern Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

  • I devoured this book in two days!! I couldn’t put it down because there’s so many twists and turns and outrageous characters. I always love Kushner’s books because he manages to bring strange worlds (video game visionaries, high-school football heroes committing bank heists, Vegas card sharks, etc.) into focus, with humor and super compelling storytelling. The Players Ball is an unbelievable true story about these two genius tech entrepreneurs, one a dorky superpower and the other his sleazy, con artist nemesis, who obsessively battle for control, money, sanity and dangerous stakes. I cherish when I find a great story that I can’t put down, so I loved being transfixed by this battle. I learned a lot about what goes into starting a business, running a business, stealing a business and fighting to the death “Match”. I really loved this book and the unbelievable ending.

The Shot Caller A Latino Gangbanger&rsquos Miraculous Escape from a Life of Violence to a New Life in Christ Audible Audio Edition Casey Diaz Mike Yorkey contributor Nicky Cruz foreword Bob Borquez Emanate Books Books Reviews

  • I won’t lie. The night after reading Casey Diaz’ account of life in the streets of LA as a hell-bent gangbanger, I lay awake in my house thinking that I was hearing people breaking and entering. He might have pulled some punches in describing doing whatever he could to show his peers how dark he was. But I think he didn’t pull many.

“The Shotcaller” may not be a read for the faint of heart.

But it is a read for people with a heart, and a soul. Diaz’ life was supernaturally transformed through the power of some things that many in the 21st century disregard as old-fashioned, or pure myth. The persevering prayer of a virtual stranger. The life’s work of a carpenter born centuries ago in a stable outside of Bethlehem. It takes heart and soul to read an honest man’s account of a supernatural intervention that he was not looking for or planning on or working toward. When a strong man with a strong mind admits to giving himself up to something so real, so powerful, and so foreign to his previous way of thinking and living – and when he tells us of all of the things that started happening in his life, against all hope – maybe we should listen. Today, one of those men is Casey Diaz.

This is not the story of a rotten-to-the-core man who one day woke up and decided on his own to turn over a new leaf. This is not a testament to the penal system and its power to transform a life. This is the story of a sinful child who was shown mercy by his supernatural father, who created him and whose love for him was unshakable despite that child’s complete and utter rebellion.

Some may find the violence Diaz describes in “The Shotcaller” to be upsetting. But acknowledging the sin may serve to fully illustrate the magnitude of the triumph. And to remind us to be careful in our judgments no one is beyond the reach of their supernatural father.
  • This is an amazing story of how God's redemptive power changed the life of someone no one believed could change. At 16, Casey was so feared he had to be placed in solitary confinement in prison, not for his safety but for the safety of other prisoners and correctional officers. One woman's prayers and belief in God's power to redeem made all the difference in Casey's life. This book was an eye opener in terms of revealing the total devaluation of human life that exists in gang culture and the resulting violence that occurs. But more importantly it's the story of God's love and power triumphing over the worst of man's sin nature, and how He will use anyone who makes himself/herself available to Him to accomplish great things. The most significant takeaway for me in this book is that I need to pray more, pray boldly, and be available myself to be used by God.
  • Reading Casey’s story is a glimpse into the heart of God. Who would want a violent savage gang member, with years of hate, hurting people, and self destruction? Jesus would! And Jesus is still using ordinary people to do extraordinary things!
  • I received his book a few days ago. WOW!!! I CANNOT express how I feel after reading this great story of a GREAT miracle, created by the GREAT God...my God! I cried in sadness, I was SO angry, I was lost in thought, I sobbed in joy, I was a total emotional mess! I could NOT put it down! I felt as if I were there with him! IT IS INCREDIBLE!
Casey, THANK YOU for sharing your story. There's an immense admiration for what you allowed our Lord to do in your life! I'm in awe of it!
GOD IS REAL!!! Never stop praying for your loved ones - the "impossible" ones. If God did it in and for this man (READ THE BOOK!), GOD CAN CHANGE ANYONE AND DO ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING!!! ❤
  • I always wanted to know how "religious" a convict had to be for parole. Through Mr. Diaz's transformation and the input from the INS agents, Mr. Diaz has genuinely changed his life through his conviction to Christ. His life has been truly blessed after his acceptance of his evil deeds. The book also gives insight to the world of the gangs — an excellent read. Kudos to you and the best to you, your family and your congregation.
  • Really enjoyed reading how Christ transformed this man's life. All of us have sinned and need to acknowledge what Jesus did for us by his death. Mr. Diaz was repentant, very brave and truthfully shared his faith with others even when it could have cost him his life here on earth. He knew he was saved either way. I encourage you to read this...I couldn't put it down.
  • This book had me from the beginning. I don't even know how I heard about the book, but I pre-ordered it and was excited when it arrived. Reading Casey's life experience was hard sometimes and is not for the faint of heart, but it helps you see the dramatic change that took place. This book is an encouragement to me as I have felt discouraged in not seeing prayers for unsaved friends and family answered, but this book reminded me to keep praying. Keep interceding for those you love in prayer because prayer works. I highly recommend reading this book!
  • I read the Shot Caller in just a couple of days. Casey Diaz was transformed by Christ in prison from a ruthless gang leader to a model citizen, a loving son, father and husband. I especially enjoyed his insights on keeping kids out of gangs and the warning signs to look for. His experience of leaving prison and looking for a good church and fellowship was convicting. I would encourage everyone to read this book to better understand the gang issues, and consider where the Christian community can do more to combat societal issues that lead to gang involvement.

The Big Bottom Biscuit Specialty Biscuits and Spreads from Sonoma Big Bottom Market Michael Volpatt 9780762465309 Books Reviews

  • I am addicted to the biscuits at Big Bottom Market and I'm thrilled to now have all of these unique recipes to make at home. The Sea Biscuit is a perennial favorite, and I can't wait to make the Claw & Slaw! I love that Michael included so many variations of not only biscuit recipes but also recipes for spreads and other great go-withs like the Market Pulled Pork (doesn't even require that you serve it with biscuits!). I never buy cookbooks without a ton of photos because I really want to see what the end-product will look like. This book is filled with gorgeously styled photographs of the majority of the recipes featured in the book. You will not be disappointed by this book! I absolutely love it and had to wrestle it out of the hands of my co-workers who were so mesmerized by it when it arrived!
  • Who wouldn’t like a “Big Bottom” biscuit? Biscuits seem intimidating to make - this book makes all things entertaining seem possible - especially the biscuits! Even if you don’t actually make them, you will love the spreads and ideas for creative pairings. Whether serious about making food - or serious about serving it - The Big Bottom Biscuit will take you there.
  • so well done, easy, fun recipes....gorgeous photography, hilariously written. Kudos to the author

This book illustrates how teachers can draw upon young adult literature to facilitate students’ social action. Each chapter centers on one novel that represents a contemporary topic including police brutality, women’s rights, ecojustice, and bullying. In each, authors provide pre-, during-, and after reading strategies for teaching that connect the social issues in the texts to students’ lives and to the world around them. They then offer a multitude of avenues for student action, emphasizing the need to move readers from understanding and awareness to asserting their own agency and capacities to effect change in their local, national, and global communities. In addition to methods for scaffolding students’ analysis of texts and topics, authors also offer a plethora of additional resources such as documentaries, canonical companions for study, connected music, and supplementary lesson plans.

Dwelling Simple Ways to Nourish Your Home Body and Soul edition by Melissa Michaels Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

  • I love Melissa Michaels books about home. Creating spaces we use and love is a favorite of mine and her books combine my love of books + my love of creating home.

I love the titles of the chapters in Dwelling.

It has ten chapters and each chapter focuses on an attribute or action.

    The First Chapter is…… invitation.
    Second is……..well-being.
    Third is……….sanctuary.
    Fourth is……..loveliness.
    Fifth is………..savoring.
    Sixth is………streamlining.
    Seventh is………foraging.
    Eighth is………nourishing.
    Ninth is………gathering.
    Tenth is………….thriving.

I always love Melissa’s tips and practical ideas for adding special moments and touches to our days and our homes.

Dwelling is a book about not only our homes, but our bodies that we dwell in and live in everyday. Melissa wisely points us toward creating a home sanctuary we can thrive in, dwell in, feel well in. She shows us ways to simplify and add order and peace to our rhythm of life.

Sitting down and turning the pages of this book refreshes me!

I received a copy to review and all opinions are 100% my own.
  • Melissa’s new book is an invitation for us to be more intentional with ourselves. This book is so easy to pick up and read as it provides wonderful insights into how to nourish and maintain our body and home. The author gives us a glimpse into her own journey and shows incredible vulnerability with her own challenges as lessons for us to relate with. Dwelling is like your long lost friend. A friend that you can revisit and derive new meaning over time based on your own journey and growth. Sometimes you just need a friend to remind you what is most important in life - you’re home and body.

Melissa reminds us that our body and home are inexorably linked and that our very being is not sustainable when one or the other is not being nourished. The book provides simple guidelines and tools to help identify your needs. Like many things, our mind, body, home, and soul requires intentionality, maintenance, grace, and an understanding that our home grows with us as we develop.

It is a beautiful reminder that well-being is a lifelong pursuit. Melissa shares her own stories around faith, family, struggles, and her own discoveries as she calls for us to not be perfect but make progress towards a more holistic life.

This is the right book to pick up in any part of our lives as we examine and continue to re-examine who we are and the people that we invite into our sacred spaces - home. )
  • I think the alternate title for this book should be Living Lovely because the message Melissa conveys is gentle, encouraging, and delightful. Finding your "art" when it comes to your home and self is a process in which you should enjoy and edit until you find what makes you feel well where you dwell. A delightful addition to my Melissa Michaels collection on my bookshelf, this will make perfect gifts for others in my life. I am already looking forward to the next one!
  • This author gets me. She’s very real and thorough in this book. It has helped me tremendously, at home and for my own well-being. I highly recommend this book, especially those that suffer with anxiety or depression.
  • Love the message in this book - taking the time to learn myself, make my home a sanctuary, and take care of myself body and soul! Melissa Michaels words are an inspiration and encouragement again.
  • I love this book - so readable and truly helpful in growing our home space into what makes for a healing place to be every day.
  • This little book is all about creating a home that makes us feel like we have our own little heaven on earth. A sanctuary where we feel our best and may never want to leave. It’s about making a home that our friends and family will want to visit and feel inspired to live their best life. It really is all about living our best life.
  • Love this book! Great inspiration!!

HIS CURVY DESIRES High Heat BBW Romance Curves for the Alpha Book 1 edition by Sara Hazel Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • So many issues - he basically tricks her, they have sex but neither mentions her virginity, she tells him no and the next sentence is 'One more time' - he wants her for keeps but offers money to bribe her in the beginning and then wonders if she is a gold digger? He gets a hard on watching his ex-wife bending over a shelf in the store and has memories of how good it was? Then doesn't make a real effort to shut down her advances? WTF! It was all over the place & I was really annoyed. I will never read this author again!
  • Lucy is a virgin and sweet girl who applies for a job at Kyles company. When kyle meets Lucy he can't take his eyes off of her. He loves his women thick. He hires her and things take off in more than one way, but his past causes issues and his new feelings will be tested. Read now to see how it ends!!
  • Her fall hard for the young lady his assistant knows the chemistry it got between them and he wants to have a relationship with her till his ex wife shows up at the party. A month later a heart felt speech they are back together.
  • I am finding it hard to finish this....young does not have to equal dumb. H has done nothing to earn her trust, but she continues to give it. I read a lot of instalove, but this was way to instalust. I do not like this and would not recommend it.
  • This is my first read from Sara Hazel and i am hooked. I could not put thia book down. Sexy and erotic. I am looking forward to reading more from Sara Hazel!!
  • I'm sorry but this wasn't good. It was a short story that I skimmed because I couldn't handle actually reading in detail. I tried but this seems to be written by a teenager that's stuck in the "on again, off again" cycle. Literally from one page to the next they are having sex, then they can't touch again, then sex "just one more time". And what guy that is totally in love with the chick next to him is staring at his ex-wifes panties and reminiscing about hot sex they had? And then getting hard and "freezing" when the ex-wife kisses him later in the book. The whole time he's internally fighting himself that he shouldn't have sex with her because he wants someone else. That shows emotional immaturity and unresolved issues, not a mature alpha male that knows his mind. The female lead is super immature and juvenile and the Male lead is just as bad. Would not recommend you waste your time on this one.
  • If you're looking for a book that is.mostly heat then this is it for you. Very detailed high energy high heat. Mostly heat some regular interactions but mostly this book is all down and dirty.
  • Kyle needs a fake fiance and Lucy needs a job. Did not take long before the dirty and 🔥 sex took over. Not bad story something quick to read with a glass of 🍷.

In honor of the 10-year anniversary of The Heroin Diaries, Nikki Sixx's definitive and best-selling memoir on drug addiction is now available on audio for the first time, read by Nikki Sixx! This shocking, gripping, and at times darkly hilarious memoir explores Nikki's yearlong war with a vicious heroin addiction. Now more than ever, with opioid addiction ravaging our country and rising by 20 percent in the past year alone, Nikki's story of both his descent into drug-addled decay and subsequent recovery and transition into a rehabilitation advocate is now more relevant than ever.

When Mötley Crüe was at the height of its fame, there wasn't any drug Nikki Sixx wouldn't do. He spent days - sometimes alone, sometimes with other addicts, friends, and lovers - in a coke and heroin-fueled daze.

The highs were high, and Nikki's journal entries reveal some euphoria and joy. But the lows were lower, often ending with Nikki in his closet, surrounded by drug paraphernalia and wrapped in paranoid delusions.

Here, Nikki shares the diary entries - some poetic, some scatterbrained, some bizarre - of those dark times.

Brutally honest, utterly riveting, and surprisingly moving, The Heroin Diaries follows Nikki during the year he plunged to rock bottom - and his courageous decision to pick himself up and start living again.

"I really enjoyed reading Nkki's account of his rapid and total descent into heroin addiction. Its full of honesty and candor and he at no time makes excuses for it or blames others for it. Although his unstable childhood was no doubt a factor, he totally owns and takes responsibility for his behavior and addiction. I also enjoyed reading the perspectives of others who were around him during this time. It is truly amazing that he survived and is still around to talk about it. Its a cautionary tale that speaks volumes of his strength and resilience to make it through the horror of addiction, as so many other brilliant artists do not. Nikki's reflection on this time period of his life makes for good reading even if you're not a Motley Cru fan. It may even make you take a closer look."

The Heroin Diaries 10 Year Anniversary Edition A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star Audible Audio Edition Nikki Sixx Sophie Kargman Ross Marquand Simon Schuster Audio Books Reviews

  • First, let me say that my son was/is an addict & just over a year clean & sober. After he asked for help & we got him into the in-house rehab, based upon AA/NA principles, he came home on a day pass & we took him to eat @ the restaurant of his choice & then to to see the movie of his choice. Afterward, I asked him what helped him make the decision to become clean...first, he said us, then, he said he'd read the Heroine Diaries by Nikki Sixx, which he first checked out @ the local library...& then asked me to get as an ebook. It moved him.. I was working on my master's degree @ the time & didn't get a chance to read it until after I'd earned my degree (a/k/a yesterday). I finished it today. Nikki, your book was brutally honest & touched my kid to his soul. Now, I understand why. I'm thankful you wrote it. Thanks for helping me save the most important human being in my life...he's only 25 years old. He's going places now & has. remained strong. We just went to our first concert together on 10/10/15 in Evansville, IN....we both saw Motley Crue for the very first time (I've been trying to see your band since I was 16.. Crue has always been my favorite band...& Drew grew up listening to it his entire life. So...thank you for helping us through many tough times & helping him turn his life around & to you...congrats on your rehabilitation -Kim
  • Nikki hits a home run on this one. The first thing that struck me is the way the book is presented. It's not a dry, white page, black words presentation - it's constructed in a graphic novel motif, complete with sketches and anecdotal notes from Nikki and those around him at the time (Dec. 1986 - Dec. 1987). It was during this period I saw the Crue on the GGG tour. Little did the 18 yo in row 23 on the floor of the Spectrum realize the suicidal path of my heroes. This book makes you feel like taking a shower; it is raw, brutal, dirty, and always honest. This disease knows no boundaries, and Nikki shows (with a lot of hard work), you can manage to put a life together. The book is very sad a times, but so worth the read.
  • I really enjoyed reading Nkki's account of his rapid and total descent into heroin addiction. It may even make you take a closer look.
  • I have to give this book 5 stars! This book, showed me, that when you love a band, and think you’re a super fan and know everything about them. I knew nothing, I never knew, Nikki Sixx was so broken, and has endured so much, and am amazed he came through everything he endured! This book gave me so much more respect, for him, and for the music he wrote for Motley Crue. I now find myself listening more to the lyrics and feeling some of the pain. I totally would recommend this book to not only Motley Crue fans, or Nikki Sixx fans, but anyone going through hardships or whatever your going through in life, we all can take notes from this man.
  • Motley Crue is my favorite band of all time. I've seen them play several times and they never disappoint. The Dirt on Motley Crue was an amazing read, so raw. In this book I find Nikki genuine and vulnerable. A series of journals written in a truly dark time of his life. I can't even believe he was able to even think to write in a journal at this time of his life. I'm glad he did. His upbringing is relatable but lead him down a very deep path. great book, easy read, so well written.
  • Excellent book. I'm a child of the 80s, so I grew up on Crue. I saw Vince way back when he was fired/quit from the band and went solo ,and he did all the Crue's songs anyway. And I saw them on their farewell tour in 2015.
Excellent first person narrative of a man going to his own personal hell. The additional commentaries by people who were there to watch his fall and give their perspective is fascinating. Nikki's inside dirt on who did what to who and when is darkly funny and compelling
An excellent read and cautionary tale of what unlimited access to whatever you want can do to you.
Crue fans will love it and even if you're not a fan/not of this age category, it's just a plain good read.
